I was having the best dream. There was a hot lady ready and waiting, a movie I was interested in seeing (I don't recall which one), and Lazer Tag. It was all going to happen. Then my mom showed up, and other people, and it all went downhill from there.
SUUUUUUCK.

I drove home and hit an alarm in the garage, went in the house to deactivate it. Talked to Mom. Made an egg that turned into a pancake. There was some sort of concert, kinda like Metallica S&M, but it was analy. It seemed like we were fighting off some demon. There was also some kind of Brutal Legend style army building adding another band and some monster on the top stage of the "auditorium" I fought some evil man who was darth vader from Soul Caliber 4, and I "spawned" as Yoda. he killed me by cheating. I got up as a ghost, and I saw my friends, and I was flying around. There was a poker table where Emma was dealing to some other friends of mine. MK's boyfriend yelled to me, and I gave MK a hug, even though I wasn't sure if I could, 'cause I thought I was a ghost. I tried talking to Emily, who rolled her eyes at me when I asked if she could see me. Then I had to find Willow (yes, Willow) to ask her what I was and since I had died an unnatural death if I could be brought back to life. Some other guy there told me that I'm not a ghost, and that I can fly, have some powers, and the only thing is I'll have to do a demon a favor (his example was making a hip hop album).
Then there was some guy running from some other guys, so I stepped in a fought them off while Them Crooked Vultures was playing. I was about to fight someone else, and I woke up.
I might have got some of that wrong, and I may have forgotten some parts entirely, but it was a really weird dream. It could have been the Burger I ate pretty close to when I went to bed, or the fact that I fell asleep at 3:45am. Probably both.

A few weeks ago, coming home from the Slipknot show, Xander, Jackson, and I started talking about our favorite bands. Jackson seemed to have the easiest time naming off his top five bands and Xander didn't have too much trouble either. I on the other hand, really had a hard time coming up with my favorite bands. I think because I tend to listen to only stuff I really like, I never really think of my music in terms of what I like more. Of course, over the last few weeks I've been thinking about it, and I'm going to try to name and number my 5 favorite bands and give some insight into why I like them.
1. Foo Fighters
A few years ago, while I was still adjusting to college life, I had a small breakdown, and begged my parents to pick me up on a Thursday night for the weekend. On the way home, I didn't want to talk, so I put my headphones on, hit random, and Gimme Stitches from There Is Nothing Left To Lose came on. Now, I had I think three FF records at the time, but I hadn't really given them a good listen. I immediately switched from random to the album, and listened to that all the way home. The lyrics and each song on the album really seemed to parallel what I was feeling at the time. I pretty much fell in love with the band that day.
Foo Fighters are my number one because they are fronted by an amazingly talented musician, they have four members who just play so well with each other, they're not caught up in being "rock stars", and Dave Grohl writes fucking amazing songs. Heavy, soft, even acoustic. The Dude is my greatest influence in music. Anyone who can gain recognition for drumming in Nirvana then make his name singing and playing guitar in another band is my hero.
Recommended: The Colour and the Shape (album), Acoustic side of In Your Honor, Skin & Bones live DVD.
2. The Decemberists
While reading Questionable Content (a webcomic) I stumbled across this band. The author of the comic has a recommended listening page ('cause the comic is rife with indie/hipster culture), and Picaresque was there. I was curious as to what they sounded like, so I downloaded the album. at first I thought it was a little weird, but I did like it, and now, four more albums later, I really can't get enough of them.
The band is kind of a rock band, more folky, but with amazing song arrangements, and lyrics that eschew the common stuff. They wrote an 18 minute song in five movements about Táin Bó Cúailnge. In some parts it sounds like Deep Purple, and in some parts it sounds like the furthest thing from rock ever, but it always sounds epic. The band takes the contemporary rock set up and weaves stories full of imagery in their songs. From dark songs about a mother's "night job" to put food on the table, to an uplifting song about a group of refugees finding a home on the water, to a full album rock opera, this band hits all the right pleasure centers of my brain.
Recommended: The Crane Wife (album), The Hazards of Love (album), The Mariner's Revenge Song (Picaresque), The Chimbly Sweep, The Bachelor and the Bride (Her Majesty)
3. Red Hot Chili Peppers
I really didn't get into music until I hit high school. The first band I was really exposed to was RHCP. I ended up downloading a few songs off one of those p2p servers and I think my computer got a virus, but the seed had been planted, and I picked up Freaky Styley as my first album. I was a little put off by how different the sound was compared to the stuff off of Blood Sugar I had heard, but I still listened, and I picked up more albums and totally loved them. I ended up idolizing Flea, and I've seen them three times live.
The band has undergone some serious sound changes in its career, with early material having a much bigger funk influence. More recent stuff is much more melodic. I kinda wish that they'd go back to their roots, and I wish that Anthony Kiedis would quit just rhyming whatever and call it lyrics. Regardless, All four members are kick ass musicians, and together, they write awesome songs.
Recommended: One Hot Minute (album), Californiacation (album), Out in L.A. demo (self titled)
4. The Black Keys
Two guys from Akron, Ohio. One guitarist/vocalist, one drummer. The grittiest blues I had heard in a long time. Recorded in basements, abandoned rubber factories, and when they finally decided to record in a studio, it was an old, possibly haunted place. Cody turned me on to these two right as we were leaving high school, and I'm immensely grateful.
Dan and Pat play stripped down, low to no production blues rock; with a gritty, almost nasty sound. They don't have to "make it work" with only two members, it's just great blues riffs, soulful solos, raggedy vocals, and heavy drums. Nothing more to say.
Recommended: Midnight in her Eyes, Set Your Free (Thickfreakness), 10 am Automatic (Rubber Factory), Just a Little Heat (Magic Potion)
5. Five is going to be tough. Too many bands I like to choose one. I'm calling this one a tie between Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer, Spoon, Barenaked Ladies, Nirvana, etc.

If I get a tattoo, this will be my design. I'm really liking the idea, so this could become reality sometime soon. In case you're wondering, it's the Korean flag, with my Korean surname (김 Kim) and my American last name.

not sure if I want the characters facing me or facing out. They're facing out in this picture.

Had a dream where Megadeth I guess? was playing really badly and so Metallica boo'd 'em offstage and started playing Slipknot's Before I Forget. There was a pit, and also the frozen meat section of safeway? Anyway, it was pretty metal, and also full of raw steak. Which I guess is still pretty metal.

First day of the second week of school: check. I would say it's been "interesting" or something equally vague since my last post, but really, It's been uneventful and rather boring, so I won't go into my summer other than suffice to say, I need a job. I've figured out that a lot of my life could be enhanced greatly by landing a job. I could start saving for a car, I'm more likely to join a band as I could pay studio rent, and I could afford new toys instruments here and there as I need them. I'm looking. In the meantime, I'm doing the learning thing, and I may have found a new band to play in. It's an upstart project, but the music so far is pretty cool. We'll see how things go.
SFSU is in a "Budget Crisis" and all my classes are standing room only. it's fucked up. Hopefully I'll graduate soon.
